Ewan Cairns
THANK YOU FOR READING ABOUT MY GAP YEAR.
When I was deciding what to do next, a family friend who works for SU suggested I look into doing the SU Scotland Gap Year. I had a great experience at Basecamp in the summer, being a trainee leader on a camp, and I enjoy working with young people, so it looked like a good opportunity to gain experience whilst I figure out exactly what I want to do afterwards.
I have grown up in a supportive family and great church, and then in 2017, at LM5c (a summer camp at Lendrick Muir), I became a Christian. So, SU has been an important part of my Christian story, and I’m excited for this next year, working in step with God and following what He wants for my life.
Over the year I hope to grow in my faith, become more confident, and develop my knowledge and public speaking. All good things that I can then take into the future.
In my spare time I enjoy drumming, spending time with friends, sport and attending Christian events.
I have chosen to do a gap:local placement with SU Scotland. I will be based close to home in Cambuslang and Rutherglen with the Reachout Trust. I already know some of the people who work there, and I am looking forward to spending the year with them. My placement will involve going into schools to help at SU groups, assemblies and RME lessons, working with local Churches and special events for Christmas and Easter. As well as this, there will also be training and study, wider SU events, camps and holiday clubs, and an international mission trip.
