For Parents & Teachers
What are SU Groups
SU Groups create a place for young people to explore the Christian faith, bring friends, share ideas and enjoy time together. Through storytelling, open discussions, encouraging questions and sharing experiences pupils are invited to discover where faith can play a part in individual lives and the community.
Every SU Group is different. Primary or secondary school, large or small, it just depends on who comes along. Some groups are led by pupils, others by staff or parent volunteers. What they all have in common is people who want to spend time together thinking about God and looking at what the Bible has to say about life today in Scotland.
But some things are always the same…
- SU Groups are an optional activity, often at lunchtime or maybe after school
- Anyone who wants to come is welcome
- It’s a place to explore the Bible and think about faith
Learn more about SU Groups by reading our document, Values of an SU Group.
We believe that the Christian faith is as relevant today as it has ever been. SU Groups create opportunities for interested pupils to grow and develop spiritually, and are a place for them to explore the Christian faith and how it plays a part in people's lives.
Our starting point is that children and young people are capable of making their own informed choices and acting in their own interests. We are committed to educational approaches that are holistic and inclusive, and offer support to schools in developing, in all children and young people, their capacities as Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors.
The protocol for Scripture Union Scotland staff and volunteers working in Scottish schools provides important information about how we work in schools.
How can I start a new group?
If you are interested in setting up an SU Group in your local primary or secondary school we'd love to hear from you.
We know of many schools where there is a desire to have an SU Group, but currently no volunteers available to make that happen. SU Groups may be run by teachers, pupils, parents or others and anyone running a group must be an approved SU volunteer.
- Contact your staff member to discuss your plans. They can help you connect with other volunteers and provide advice about, applying to become an SU volunteer and getting the group started.
- Read our guidance on Starting an SU Group for details on the best approach.
